The Fish River Canyon in southern Namibia is one of the planet’s most remarkable landforms, stretching across vast terrain in the Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. It is one of Africa’s largest canyons, carved over millions of years by the Fish River as it etched a deep, twisting gorge into the desert plateau. From high viewpoints like Hell’s Bend, visitors can see layers of rock dropping away to reveal ridges and ravines that seem to go on forever, all under wide, open skies. This grand scale makes it a favorite stop for those exploring Namibia’s varied landscapes.

History and geology are written into the canyon’s walls. The canyon’s shape tells a story of shifting plates and ancient river flows, while archaeological sites in the surrounding region show that people have lived here for tens of thousands of years. Evidence of San hunter-gatherers and early stone age tools have been found in the wider area, and the desert’s rhythm continues to shape life here today.

For those who want to experience the canyon up close, the Fish River Canyon Trail is an intense 4- to 5-day route that leads into the heart of the gorge from the northern Hobas viewpoint to the hot springs at ǀAi-ǀAis. This trail follows the dry riverbed for around 85 km, with dramatic cliffs rising on either side and few signs of modern life. Permits and medical certificates are required, and the trek is only open in the cooler months between April and September, when conditions are safest.

Not everyone makes the long descent into the canyon and many travelers choose to enjoy superb rim walks and lookout points that offer expansive views with less effort. Around sunset, the rocks catch warm light that photographers and visitors find unforgettable. Nearby, the ǀAi-ǀAis Hot Springs provide a soothing end to a day of exploration, with thermal pools that can reach very warm temperatures.
