Dallas is a major city in North Texas, situated within the broad prairie and wooded creek landscapes of the Trinity River region. Its urban area includes a dense downtown, established residential neighborhoods, modern business districts, and extensive parks and trails. The city is part of the larger Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and has developed as a major center for business, transportation, technology, arts, and culture. Although highly urbanized, Dallas contains natural spaces such as the Trinity River corridor, White Rock Lake, and the Great Trinity Forest.

Dallas has a diverse cultural identity shaped by Indigenous history, migration, commerce, and communities from across the United States and the world. The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza interprets the history surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, while the Dallas Heritage Village preserves historic buildings illustrating earlier life in North Texas. The Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center, and African American Museum provide additional perspectives on art and cultural history. The city is also known for its deep connections to Black, Hispanic, Asian, and immigrant communities.

Dallas offers a broad range of urban and natural attractions. The Arts District contains major cultural institutions, while the Perot Museum of Nature and Science provides exhibits focused on science and the natural world. Klyde Warren Park links parts of downtown with landscaped public space, and the Katy Trail follows a former railway corridor through several central neighborhoods. White Rock Lake provides opportunities for walking, cycling, sailing, and birdwatching, while the Great Trinity Forest protects one of the largest urban bottomland hardwood forests in the United States. The Trinity River Audubon Center provides trails and wildlife habitat within this ecosystem.

Dallas has a varied food culture shaped by Texas traditions and its diverse population. Barbecue, Tex-Mex, chicken-fried steak, and other Southern and Southwestern dishes remain important, while Vietnamese, Korean, Indian, Ethiopian, Mexican, and other cuisines reflect the city's international communities. The Dallas Farmers Market brings together regional produce and prepared foods, while the Bishop Arts District and other neighborhoods contain independent restaurants and food businesses. A distinctive local detail is the city's connection to the cattle and ranching economy of North Texas, which remains visible in food traditions, western imagery, and events such as the State Fair of Texas.
