Goodenough Island is one of the D’Entrecasteaux Islands in Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea, lying in the Solomon Sea north of the mainland. The island has a distinctive rounded form, with steep slopes rising toward Mount Vineuo in the center and narrow coastal plains around much of its shoreline. Villages and gardens are scattered around the coast, where communities grow crops and maintain strong connections with the surrounding sea. Goodenough is relatively remote and has limited infrastructure, giving it a predominantly rural character shaped by subsistence agriculture, fishing, and village life.

The island is home to communities with distinct local languages and traditions, including the Goodenough people and other groups whose cultural practices vary between villages. Traditional knowledge remains important in agriculture, fishing, canoe use, weaving, and the preparation of food. Community life is closely connected with customary land and family networks, while Christianity also plays an important role in many settlements. Goodenough Island is part of the wider cultural region of Milne Bay, where ceremonial exchange, traditional dancing, singing, and carved or woven objects form important expressions of local identity.

Goodenough Island’s mountainous interior and surrounding coastline create varied landscapes within a relatively compact area. Mount Vineuo, the island’s highest peak, rises to more than 2,500 meters and dominates the interior. Forested slopes descend toward coastal villages, gardens, beaches, and small bays, while offshore waters contain coral reefs and other marine habitats. The island also has historical significance from the Second World War, when Australian and Japanese forces fought in the D’Entrecasteaux Islands. Wartime remains and memorials can be found in parts of the region, alongside the island’s natural landscapes.

Food on Goodenough Island is based largely on crops grown in village gardens and resources gathered from the sea. Sweet potato, taro, cassava, yam, banana, and coconut are important staples, while fish and other seafood supplement agricultural produce. Sago is also used in parts of Milne Bay, although food traditions differ between communities. Traditional cooking commonly involves earth ovens and other methods suited to village life. A distinctive feature of Goodenough is the steep transition from coastal settlements to the high central mountains, with tropical gardens and forest extending upward toward Mount Vineuo.
