Jersey City is a major waterfront city in northeastern New Jersey, situated across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan. Its skyline, historic neighbourhoods, parks, and extensive waterfront make it one of the most urban places in the state. Exchange Place and the Hudson River waterfront provide direct views of Manhattan, while the historic Downtown district contains brownstones, churches, restaurants, and independent businesses. Liberty State Park creates a large open space along the harbour, with views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The city’s location has also made it an important centre for transportation, commerce, immigration, and international communities.

Jersey City stands on the traditional homeland of the Lenape people, whose presence in the region predates European settlement. Later development was shaped by Dutch colonists, maritime trade, railroads, immigration, and industrial growth along the waterfront and Hudson River. The Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, now part of Liberty State Park, recalls the period when millions of immigrants passed through the area after arriving at Ellis Island. The Jersey City Museum and local historic districts preserve aspects of the city’s cultural development, while neighbourhoods such as Journal Square, Greenville, and Bergen-Lafayette reflect the many communities that have shaped modern Jersey City.

Liberty State Park is one of Jersey City’s defining attractions, covering more than 1,000 acres of waterfront land with walking paths, picnic areas, fields, and expansive harbour views. The Empty Sky Memorial honours New Jersey residents who died in the September 11 attacks and stands within the park. The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway extends through the city, connecting parks and neighbourhoods with views across the river. Liberty Science Center offers interactive exhibits and a planetarium, while the historic Central Railroad Terminal provides a striking landmark beside the water. The city’s skyline also offers some of the clearest public views of Lower Manhattan.

Jersey City’s food scene reflects its highly diverse population, with Indian, Filipino, Dominican, Cuban, Italian, Middle Eastern, Korean, and many other cuisines represented across its neighbourhoods. Newark Avenue in Downtown Jersey City is particularly known for restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and pedestrian activity, while Journal Square has long been associated with South Asian businesses and dining. The city also has a growing craft beverage and independent restaurant scene. Beyond food, Jersey City supports galleries, music venues, public murals, and community arts programmes. Its waterfront location, multicultural neighbourhoods, and proximity to Manhattan have created a city with an identity distinct from both suburban New Jersey and New York City.
