Jeffreys Bay is a coastal town in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, situated along the Indian Ocean about 75 kilometres west of Gqeberha. Commonly called J-Bay, it is internationally recognized for its long, powerful right-hand surf breaks, particularly at Supertubes. The town stretches along a broad coastline of sandy beaches, rocky points and dunes, with residential neighborhoods extending inland from the shore. Fishing, surfing and coastal tourism are central to its identity, while nearby wetlands and nature reserves provide a quieter contrast to the beachfront. Jeffreys Bay also serves as a gateway to the wider Kouga region.

Jeffreys Bay has a strong surfing culture that influences its shops, cafés, local events and community life. The town hosts major international surfing competitions at Supertubes, attracting professional surfers and spectators from around the world. Its wider cultural setting reflects the diverse heritage of the Eastern Cape, where Afrikaans, isiXhosa and English are commonly spoken. Fishing and shell collecting have also been associated with the local coastline, and Jeffreys Bay is particularly known for the variety of seashells found on its beaches. The town’s Shell Museum displays marine shells from South Africa and other parts of the world, highlighting this distinctive coastal tradition.

The coastline is Jeffreys Bay’s principal natural attraction, with surf breaks including Supertubes, Point and Kitchen Windows. Dolphin Beach provides a central stretch of sand, while Paradise Beach to the south offers a quieter coastal environment. The Kabeljous Nature Reserve protects coastal vegetation, wetlands and estuarine habitats that support birdlife and other wildlife. Nearby Seekoei River Nature Reserve contains a tidal estuary and salt marshes, providing feeding areas for waterbirds. Farther inland, the landscape changes to farmland and low hills, while the broader region provides access to the Gamtoos River valley and the natural environments of the Eastern Cape.

Food in Jeffreys Bay reflects its coastal setting and the broader cooking traditions of South Africa. Fresh fish, calamari and other seafood appear on local menus, often served grilled or fried with vegetables, salads or chips. Braai remains a familiar part of local food culture, while cafés and restaurants cater to the town’s surfing community and holiday visitors. The surrounding Kouga region produces citrus fruit, dairy products and other agricultural goods.
