Paxi, also known as Paxos, is a small Ionian island south of Corfu, known for dense olive groves, sheltered harbours, limestone cliffs, and clear coastal waters. The island’s main settlement, Gaios, surrounds a protected harbour formed by the islets of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia, while Lakka and Loggos provide two smaller waterfront villages. Unlike the drier landscapes of many Cycladic islands, Paxi has abundant greenery, with olive trees and cypress growing across much of its interior. Narrow roads and old footpaths connect villages, beaches, chapels, and olive groves, giving the island a distinctly rural character.

Paxi’s history is reflected in its Venetian-influenced architecture, small churches, monasteries, and historic waterfront buildings. Gaios developed around its sheltered harbour, while the islet of Agios Nikolaos contains the remains of a Venetian castle. The Monastery of Panagia stands on the nearby island of the same name and overlooks the entrance to Gaios harbour. In Loggos, the abandoned Anemogiannis factory recalls the island’s former olive-oil and soap production. Traditional footpaths through the olive groves also connect historic settlements and religious sites, preserving routes that were once important for local agriculture and travel.

The western coast of Paxi is characterized by steep white limestone cliffs, sea caves, arches, and secluded coves. The Blue Caves are among the island’s best-known natural features and are accessible by boat, while the Tripitos Arch is a large natural rock formation on the southern coast. On the eastern side, beaches such as Harami, Monodendri, Levrechio, Marmari, and Kaki Lagada occupy smaller sheltered bays. Walking routes cross the island’s ancient olive groves, with trails linking Lakka, Loggos, Gaios, and coastal viewpoints. Nearby Antipaxos adds further beaches, vineyards, and coastal landscapes to the area.

Paxi’s cuisine draws heavily on the produce of the Ionian countryside and surrounding sea. Olive oil is central to local cooking, reflecting the island’s extensive olive groves, while seafood, fresh fish, vegetables, herbs, cheeses, and locally produced wine appear on menus in Gaios, Lakka, and Loggos. Small tavernas around the harbours serve traditional Greek dishes alongside regional specialties, with many restaurants emphasizing locally sourced ingredients. The island’s compact size also makes village-hopping a natural part of exploring its food culture, allowing visitors to experience different waterfront settings while travelling between the three main settlements.
