Nuuksio National Park is a protected landscape of forests, lakes, rocky hills, and wetlands in southern Finland, close to the Helsinki metropolitan area. The park lies mainly in Espoo and extends into Kirkkonummi and Vihti, yet its terrain feels far removed from the nearby urban region. Pine and spruce forests cover much of the area, while numerous small lakes occupy hollows between granite ridges. The park is especially known for its accessibility, allowing visitors to reach marked trails and wilderness landscapes without traveling far from Finland’s largest urban center.

Nuuksio’s landscape reflects the traditional relationship between people and Finland’s forests. Old rural farms and meadows remain within and around the protected area, while historic traces of settlement can be found along several trails. The park is also part of the wider Espoo Nuuksio region, where outdoor recreation has long been closely connected with local life. Traditional Finnish forest skills, including berry and mushroom gathering, remain relevant in the area. The Finnish Nature Centre Haltia, located beside the park, introduces visitors to Finland’s national parks, landscapes, and natural heritage and serves as an important visitor center for Nuuksio.

The park’s main attractions are its varied forest and lake landscapes rather than a single landmark. Marked trails lead through rocky terrain, pine forests, wetland areas, and along the shores of lakes such as Nuuksion Pitkäjärvi, Haukkalampi, and Kattilajärvi. Several viewpoints provide views across the forested hills, while designated campfire sites and shelters allow visitors to experience traditional Finnish outdoor recreation. Nuuksio also provides habitat for flying squirrels, a protected species associated with mature forests, along with birds, mammals, and other woodland wildlife. Hiking, cycling on permitted routes, camping, and nature observation are among the main activities.

Helsinki
Helsinki
Nature is never far in Helsinki. Locals swim in the sea, walk forested trails, and gather mushrooms or berries all within city limits. One popular local habit is heading to the sauna, and the city offers several open-to-the-public options. Löyly, located on the waterfront, combines traditional wood-burning saunas with a sleek, modern design. In winter, visitors can even pair a sauna session with a quick dip through a hole cut in the ice for an experience both shocking and strangely calming.

Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi, located just a few kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, is widely recognized as the official hometown of Santa Claus. From late August through early April, the Northern Lights are visible on clear nights, and several local guides offer nighttime tours to remote locations for optimal viewing. During summer, the sun doesn't set for weeks, giving travelers the rare chance to hike or kayak under a sky that stays bright at midnight.
