Bajos del Toro is a small mountain community in Alajuela Province, set in a highland valley between Poás Volcano and the Juan Castro Blanco National Park area. The region is known for its cool climate, forested slopes, rivers, and concentration of waterfalls. Its rural landscape includes farms, pastures, wooded hills, and small settlements connected by winding roads. Water flowing through the surrounding mountains is a defining feature of the area, with streams and rivers feeding numerous cascades. Bajos del Toro is also part of the Sarchí canton, linking the community with one of Costa Rica’s well-known agricultural and craft regions.

Local life in Bajos del Toro is closely connected to farming and the mountain environment. Small-scale agriculture and rural tourism are important features of the community, while family-run lodges, restaurants, and private reserves provide services for visitors. The nearby town of Sarchí is known for traditional Costa Rican craftsmanship, particularly the painted ox cart, a national symbol. The region also reflects Costa Rica’s long-standing rural traditions, where dairy farming, agriculture, forest conservation, and family businesses remain part of everyday life. The surrounding mountains have encouraged communities to develop tourism around hiking, waterfalls, and outdoor recreation.

Waterfalls are the main attraction around Bajos del Toro. Catarata del Toro drops about 90 meters into a volcanic crater and can be reached by trails through forested terrain. Other notable waterfalls include Catarata Río Agrio, Caída del Cielo, and Tesoro Escondido, where trails lead through fields, woodland, riverbanks, and natural pools. Nearby Bosque de Paz protects cloud and rain forest habitat with trails and opportunities to observe birds and other wildlife. The area's elevation, frequent mist, steep valleys, and abundant streams create conditions for a distinctive highland ecosystem.

Food in Bajos del Toro reflects the rural character of the central highlands, with local restaurants serving Costa Rican staples such as gallo pinto, casado, tortillas, beans, plantains, and fresh dairy products. Some waterfall properties also offer meals alongside hiking trails and natural attractions. A distinctive detail of the region is the mineral-rich water associated with Río Agrio, whose name refers to the bitter or acidic character of the water and its volcanic influence. The combination of small farms, cloud forest, mountain streams, and numerous waterfalls gives Bajos del Toro a character closely tied to Costa Rica's central highlands.
