Bandelier National Monument lies in northern New Mexico near Los Alamos, protecting a rugged landscape of canyons, volcanic cliffs, mesas, and forested slopes. The monument is especially known for its ancestral Pueblo dwellings carved into soft volcanic tuff, including rooms, cavates, and ceremonial structures that remain visible along the canyon walls. Frijoles Canyon forms the main visitor area, with trails leading through archaeological sites and wooded terrain. The setting also includes streams, ponderosa pine forests, and high-elevation landscapes shaped by volcanic activity. Bandelier offers an unusual combination of archaeological remains and natural scenery within the Jemez Mountains.

Bandelier preserves evidence of ancestral Pueblo communities whose descendants remain connected to the region today. The monument contains numerous archaeological sites, including Tyuonyi, a large circular pueblo located in Frijoles Canyon, and Long House, where masonry structures were built against the canyon wall. Kivas, or ceremonial rooms, are also found throughout the area. The National Park Service works with Pueblo communities and other partners to protect these cultural resources and share their stories. Visitors can learn about Indigenous lifeways through exhibits at the Bandelier Visitor Center, ranger programmes, and trails that interpret the archaeological landscape.

Frijoles Canyon contains some of Bandelier’s most accessible archaeological sites, with a paved trail passing Tyuonyi, Long House, and the Alcove House. The Alcove House trail climbs ladders and stairs to a ceremonial kiva set high above the canyon floor. Falls Trail follows Frijoles Creek toward several waterfalls, while the Tsankawi section of the monument provides a more rugged experience with ladders, narrow passages, and views across the surrounding mesas. Beyond the archaeological areas, Bandelier protects forests and wildlife habitat, where mule deer, wild turkeys, black bears, mountain lions, and numerous bird species can be found.

Bandelier’s landscape also reveals the effects of volcanic eruptions, with the canyon walls formed largely from volcanic tuff deposited by the Jemez volcanic field. Visitors may notice the soft, porous rock around the dwellings, which ancestral Pueblo people shaped into rooms and shelters. The monument has picnic areas near the visitor centre, but food services are limited, so visitors generally bring supplies or eat in nearby communities. Seasonal shuttle services can operate for access to Frijoles Canyon, and conditions vary by season. Because archaeological sites are fragile, visitors are expected to remain on designated trails and avoid touching or climbing historic structures.
