Onguma Private Game Reserve covers about 35,970 hectares along the eastern boundary of Etosha National Park in northern Namibia. The reserve contains open savanna, bushveld, dry riverbeds, seasonal pans, ancient leadwood trees, and waterholes that attract wildlife. Its position beside Etosha gives visitors access to two different conservation areas, with guided drives within the private reserve and excursions into the national park. The Von Lindequist Gate, one of Etosha’s eastern entrances and the closest access point to the Etosha Pan, lies only a short distance from the reserve.

Onguma is also known for its focus on conservation and local knowledge. Guides include people who grew up in the surrounding region and have close connections with the landscape and its communities. The reserve works in partnership with Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism as an official Black Rhino Custodian, with the program supporting the protection of black rhinos. Onguma also operates a dedicated anti-poaching unit, conducts wildlife counts, and uses camera traps at waterholes to monitor animal movements. Conservation work forms an important part of the reserve’s identity.

Wildlife is the main attraction, with more than 30 mammal species recorded on the reserve. Lions and cheetahs are regularly encountered, while elephants, giraffes, leopards, black and white rhinos, hyenas, zebra, oryx, kudu, and other plains game also occur. Morning and evening game drives explore the reserve, while guided walks provide a closer look at tracks, plants, and smaller wildlife. The reserve’s location also allows visitors to enter Etosha National Park through Von Lindequist Gate, where the broad Etosha Pan and surrounding waterholes create a different setting for wildlife viewing.

Onguma’s landscape supports a wide range of birdlife, particularly around waterholes and seasonal wetlands. The reserve is home to a significant breeding colony of white-backed vultures, while the wider Etosha region attracts migratory birds when seasonal rains create temporary water bodies. Visitors can also experience bush walks, photography activities, and the Onkolo Hide, which provides an underground viewing point near wildlife. Meals are served at the reserve’s camps, including outdoor bush dining in suitable locations. The combination of active conservation, private wildlife viewing, and immediate access to Etosha makes Onguma a distinctive base in northern Namibia.
