Kittilä is a municipality in Finnish Lapland, extending across a broad area of forests, rivers, wetlands, and open fells north of the Arctic Circle. The municipal center lies along the Ounasjoki River, while smaller villages and settlements are scattered through the surrounding wilderness. Kittilä is closely associated with Levi, one of Finland’s best-known fell resorts, but the municipality extends well beyond the resort area into quieter rural landscapes. The region’s northern location brings marked seasonal changes, including long summer daylight, autumn colors, snow-covered winters, and the possibility of seeing the northern lights.

Kittilä’s cultural identity is rooted in northern Finnish rural life, with reindeer herding, forestry, fishing, and small-scale agriculture historically important to local communities. The municipality is also part of the wider Sámi cultural region, although Kittilä itself is predominantly Finnish-speaking. The Kittilä Local History and Culture Museum presents aspects of local life and traditional buildings, while the Särestöniemi Museum preserves the home and studio of artist Reidar Särestöniemi and explores his connection with Lapland’s landscapes. Local traditions remain visible in village events, handicrafts, reindeer husbandry, and the continued use of the surrounding forests and rivers.

The landscape around Kittilä ranges from the wooded Ounasjoki river valley to the open fells around Levi and Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Levi offers extensive outdoor routes, while the nearby Pallas-Yllästunturi area contains marked trails through old-growth forests, wetlands, and high fell country. The Ounasjoki is one of Finland’s major free-flowing rivers and provides opportunities for fishing and canoeing. Kittilä is also home to the Suurikuusikko gold mine, one of Europe’s significant gold mines, located north of the municipal center. This combination of wilderness, fell landscapes, and mining gives the area a varied local geography.

Food in Kittilä reflects the ingredients of northern Lapland, with reindeer, freshwater fish, berries, mushrooms, potatoes, and rye appearing in local cooking. Reindeer meat is commonly served in dishes such as sautéed reindeer with mashed potatoes and lingonberries, while cloudberries, bilberries, and lingonberries are gathered from the surrounding forests and wetlands. Local restaurants often incorporate these ingredients into modern Finnish dishes. A distinctive feature of Kittilä is the contrast between its tourism economy and traditional livelihoods: the municipality hosts major winter and summer activities around Levi while reindeer herding, fishing, forestry, and village life continue across the wider landscape.

Helsinki
Helsinki
Nature is never far in Helsinki. Locals swim in the sea, walk forested trails, and gather mushrooms or berries all within city limits. One popular local habit is heading to the sauna, and the city offers several open-to-the-public options. Löyly, located on the waterfront, combines traditional wood-burning saunas with a sleek, modern design. In winter, visitors can even pair a sauna session with a quick dip through a hole cut in the ice for an experience both shocking and strangely calming.

Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi, located just a few kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, is widely recognized as the official hometown of Santa Claus. From late August through early April, the Northern Lights are visible on clear nights, and several local guides offer nighttime tours to remote locations for optimal viewing. During summer, the sun doesn't set for weeks, giving travelers the rare chance to hike or kayak under a sky that stays bright at midnight.
