Vágar is one of the western islands of the Faroe Islands and the main arrival point for many visitors, with the archipelago’s only airport located near Sørvágur. The island combines high mountains, freshwater lakes, steep sea cliffs, and small villages set along sheltered bays. Its landscape is particularly varied for its size, ranging from the agricultural fields around Miðvágur and Sandavágur to the rugged western coast near Bøur and Gásadalur. Vágar is also connected to Streymoy and the wider Faroese road network through an undersea tunnel, making it one of the more accessible islands to explore by road.

Vágar’s villages retain strong connections to Faroese farming and maritime traditions. Bøur is known for its traditional black-tarred houses with grass roofs and views toward the offshore islets of Tindhólmur and Drangarnir. Sørvágur developed around fishing and farming beside Sørvágsfjørður, while Sandavágur contains the distinctive Sandavágur Church and a runestone discovered near the village. The island’s folklore is also reflected in local place names and stories, particularly around Gásadalur and the surrounding mountains. Sheep farming remains visible across the island, with stone walls and grazing land forming part of the rural landscape.

Lake Sørvágsvatn is one of Vágar’s best-known natural features, stretching across the island toward the Atlantic coast. At its southern end, the lake drains toward the sea at Bøsdalafossur, where the river drops over a cliff. Nearby Trælanípa is a prominent viewpoint above the ocean and lake, while the village of Gásadalur provides access to Múlafossur, a waterfall that falls directly toward the sea. The western coast around Bøur and Gásadalur offers views of dramatic sea stacks and cliffs, while hiking routes connect several of these landscapes across open mountain terrain.

Food on Vágar follows the wider Faroese tradition of using lamb, fish, potatoes, and other locally available ingredients. Sørvágur and the other villages provide small cafés and local dining options, while many visitors combine their exploration of the island with meals in Tórshavn or nearby communities. Fishing and sheep farming continue to influence local food culture, and the surrounding sea remains an important source of seafood. A distinctive feature of Vágar is the close concentration of several well-known Faroese landscapes: a large lake, a cliff-top viewpoint, a sea-facing waterfall, and traditional villages can all be reached within a relatively compact area.
