Annaba is a coastal city in northeastern Algeria, set along the Mediterranean near the forested hills of the Edough Mountains. Its identity combines a working port, sandy beaches, historic neighborhoods, and the archaeological remains of ancient Hippo Regius. The city is also closely associated with Saint Augustine, who served as bishop of Hippo, giving Annaba an important place in the religious and intellectual history of North Africa. Its waterfront and corniche contrast with the older urban areas, while the surrounding hills and coastline provide a varied setting that has long connected the city with fishing, agriculture, and maritime trade.

Annaba’s cultural heritage reflects several layers of North African history. The ruins of Hippo Regius preserve streets, houses, public buildings, baths, and Christian remains from the ancient city, which developed from a Phoenician trading settlement into an important Numidian and Roman center. Above the city, the Basilica of Saint Augustine is associated with the bishop and philosopher and contains his tomb. Other historic landmarks include the Mosque of Abu Marouane, the Salah Bey Mosque, and the old Casbah district. Together, these sites illustrate the mixture of Islamic, Christian, Roman, and local traditions that shaped Annaba.

The landscape around Annaba extends from Mediterranean beaches to the wooded slopes of the Edough massif. The corniche provides access to coastal areas, while nearby sites include Djenen El Bey Beach, Ras El Hamra lighthouse, and Lake Fetzara, an important wetland area inland from the city. The mountain village of Séraïdi sits high on the Edough range and overlooks the coast, while the smaller fishing settlements of Chetaïbi and El Marsa lie farther along the shoreline. This combination of sea, forest, wetlands, and mountains gives the Annaba region a varied environment within northeastern Algeria.

Annaba’s food reflects its Mediterranean location and the agricultural traditions of northeastern Algeria. Seafood and fish are important along the coast, while local markets supply vegetables, fruit, olives, and other regional produce. Traditional Algerian dishes such as couscous, chorba, and various semolina-based breads are part of everyday cuisine, alongside pastries and sweets served with coffee or mint tea. The surrounding region also produces agricultural goods from the fertile plains near the city. Annaba’s coastal setting and access to nearby countryside have therefore helped shape a cuisine that combines North African staples with seafood and local farm products.
