Agios Nikolaos is a seaside town in eastern Crete, Greece, set around Mirabello Bay and known for its unusual waterfront setting around Lake Voulismeni. The small lagoon lies at the center of the town, surrounded by cafés, tavernas, shops, and narrow streets that rise toward the surrounding hills. The harbor and marina extend the town toward the sea, while beaches and coves are found along the nearby coast. Agios Nikolaos also provides a base for exploring eastern Crete, including the coastal settlements of Elounda and the historic island of Spinalonga.

The town has roots connected to the ancient port of Lato, known as Lato pros Kamara, whose remains can be found inland near Kritsa. Its name comes from a church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, reflecting the importance of Orthodox Christianity in Cretan life. The Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos preserves finds from eastern Crete, including Minoan, Greek, and Roman objects, while the Folk Museum presents traditional clothing, crafts, household items, and other aspects of local life. Nearby Panagia Kera at Kritsa is known for its well-preserved Byzantine frescoes and distinctive church architecture.

Lake Voulismeni is the town's best-known landmark, with a narrow canal connecting it to the sea and a waterfront path lined with restaurants and cafés. The surrounding coastline contains beaches and small coves, while the wider municipality includes mountain villages, olive groves, gorges, and coastal landscapes. Elounda lies nearby, facing the Gulf of Mirabello, and boat trips commonly connect the area with Spinalonga, a fortified island at the entrance to Elounda Bay. The archaeological site of Lato, positioned in the hills above the coast, provides another perspective on the region's ancient settlement pattern.

Cretan cuisine is an important part of daily life in Agios Nikolaos, with tavernas serving dishes based on olive oil, vegetables, herbs, grains, cheese, and locally caught seafood. Traditional foods include dakos, a barley rusk topped with tomato and cheese, kalitsounia pastries, grilled fish, lamb, and a variety of seasonal vegetable dishes. Olive cultivation has deep roots in the surrounding countryside and remains an important part of the local agricultural landscape. The nearby villages also preserve traditional food production, including cheese making, honey production, and the preparation of Cretan herbs used in cooking and herbal infusions.
