Homps is a small village in the Minervois of southern France, positioned between the Corbières and the Aude valley. Its identity is closely tied to the Canal du Midi, which passes through the village and remains central to local life. The port is used by pleasure boats and provides a setting for walks along the water, while vineyards surround the settlement on the gently rolling landscape. Homps is also close to Lac de Jouarres, a recreational lake bordered by pine woodland. Its compact size and location make it a useful base for exploring the wider Minervois.

Homps has a long association with trade, winemaking, and religious institutions. The village was once home to a commandery of the Knights Hospitaller, and the Saint-Michel chapel preserves part of this religious heritage. The arrival of the Canal du Midi transformed Homps into an important wine-shipping port, linking local vineyards with markets farther along the waterway. That connection remains visible at the port today, where the Maison des Vins du Minervois introduces visitors to wines from the surrounding appellation. The village also retains traditional stone buildings and quiet streets that reflect its history as a small agricultural community.

The Canal du Midi provides Homps with its most recognizable landscape feature, with the village lock and port forming the focus of activity along the water. Walking and cycling routes follow the canal toward neighboring villages and vineyards, while boat trips offer another way to experience the waterway. About a short distance from the village, Lac de Jouarres provides opportunities for swimming and non-motorized water activities, with the lake set among pine trees. Nearby Minerve, perched above the gorges of the Cesse and Brian rivers, adds a historic hilltop destination to the surrounding countryside.

Wine is central to Homps and the surrounding Minervois, with local producers cultivating vineyards across the dry, Mediterranean landscape. The Maison des Vins du Minervois at the port provides an introduction to the area's wines and regional wine-making traditions. Local markets and neighboring villages also offer seasonal produce, olives, cheeses, and other foods associated with the Languedoc. Homps is particularly suited to travelers interested in experiencing the Canal du Midi at a small village port rather than a large town. Its combination of waterways, vineyards, and nearby lake gives the area a distinctly local character.
