Hershey is a community in central Pennsylvania best known for its long association with chocolate production and the Hershey Company. Located east of Harrisburg in the rolling landscape of the Susquehanna Valley, it combines a planned town center with parks, gardens, attractions, and residential neighborhoods. The community was developed around the chocolate industry, and that connection remains visible throughout the area. Hershey’s streets, public spaces, and distinctive buildings reflect an approach to town planning that incorporated worker housing, green spaces, schools, and community facilities alongside industrial development.

The town’s identity is closely tied to Milton S. Hershey and the institutions created around his chocolate business. Hershey’s early community planning included housing and public facilities for workers, while the Milton Hershey School developed as a residential school for children in need. The Hershey Story museum interprets the history of Milton Hershey, the company, and the town, while the Hershey Theatre serves as a major performing arts venue. Hershey Gardens also reflects the community’s emphasis on landscaped public spaces, with botanical collections and seasonal displays.

Hersheypark is the area’s largest recreational attraction, with amusement rides, family attractions, and seasonal events. ZooAmerica, located beside the park, focuses on wildlife from North America, while Hershey Gardens contains themed gardens, a butterfly atrium, and walking paths. The surrounding countryside includes wooded areas, farms, and rolling hills typical of central Pennsylvania. Nearby attractions in Harrisburg and the wider Susquehanna Valley provide access to museums, historic sites, and riverfront parks, while Hershey’s own attractions remain concentrated around the original town and the institutions associated with its chocolate heritage.

Chocolate is naturally central to Hershey’s food culture, with the Hershey Company’s products forming part of the community’s identity and visitor experience. Hershey’s Chocolate World offers demonstrations, exhibits, and opportunities to learn about chocolate production, while local restaurants and bakeries incorporate chocolate into desserts and drinks. Beyond confectionery, the surrounding region is known for Pennsylvania Dutch and central Pennsylvania foods, including pretzels, baked goods, and farm products. A distinctive detail is that Hershey was designed as more than an industrial settlement, with schools, parks, recreation facilities, and cultural institutions intended to support a complete community around the chocolate factory.
